What is Middleware?

Middleware is a full-stack observability platform that unifies APM, logs, infrastructure monitoring, RUM, synthetics, databases, and LLM monitoring on a single timeline. It detects issues from infrastructure, APM, and RUM data and resolves them automatically using OpsAI, an AI SRE Agent that continuously monitors your entire stack and provides actionable insights with suggested fixes. The platform collects telemetry data from front-end to back-end through Host Agents, SDKs, and 3rd party integrations like AWS, Azure, and Prometheus.

Key features include OpsAI for automatic issue detection, diagnosis, and remediation; Infrastructure Monitoring with auto-instrumentation across Kubernetes and Linux; Container Monitoring with deep cluster-level visibility; Log Monitoring with AI-powered QueryGenie for natural language queries; Database Monitoring for MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, and Aurora; Synthetic Monitoring for APIs and browser journeys; Application Performance Monitoring with continuous profiling; Real User Monitoring with session replay; and LLM Observability for tracking latency, token usage, costs, and model performance across providers.

Middleware is designed for DevOps teams, SREs, developers, and engineering organizations who need end-to-end observability without deep code-level changes or in-house managed data pipelines. It's built by engineers from Netflix, DigitalOcean, Google, Cisco, and Freshworks for organizations of all sizes wanting to modernize their infrastructure stack with agile, scalable, and cost-efficient observability tools. The platform reduced debugging and issue resolution time by nearly 90% for customers like Corgi and Bardeen.ai.

The platform supports all major operating systems and programming languages, with integrations for Datadog, OTel Collector, Logstash, and fluentd. Data points connect using request context to simplify exploration and root cause analysis. Middleware ingests data from big data warehouses and connects to S3 and Azure Blob for secure storage, providing complete control over telemetry data and costs while keeping data secure.

Middleware pricing

Pricing model: Freemium

Middleware offers three pricing tiers. Free Trial: $0 for 14 days with unlimited data ingestion, unlimited RUM sessions, unlimited synthetic checks, 10 browser test runs, unlimited users, community-based support, and 14-day retention. Pay As You Go: $0.3 per GB of metrics, logs, and traces; $1 per 1K RUM Sessions; $1 per 5K Synthetic Checks; $10 per 1K Browser Test Runs; includes OpsAI error solving, ingestion control & data pipeline, default 30-day retention, SSO and security features, and dedicated Slack/MS Teams channel. Enterprise: Custom pricing with volume discounts, dedicated account team, multi-year contract discounts, custom data retention, bring your own cloud, and 24x7 support. OpsAI error detection is free, but root cause analysis and automated fixes charge based on token usage.

Middleware cons

  • 14-day data retention on free tier is limited compared to competitors
  • Pay-as-you-go costs can add up quickly with high data volumes ($0.3/GB)
  • Browser test runs are expensive at $10 per 1K runs
  • OpsAI root cause analysis and automated fixes require additional token payments
  • No true free tier beyond 14-day trial - must pay after trial ends
  • Community support only on free trial without dedicated Slack/MS Teams channel
  • Data usage calculated on uncompressed logs, metrics, and traces which increases costs
  • Custom pricing requires contract negotiation for enterprise features
  • Limited to 10 browser test runs during free trial

Frequently asked questions about Middleware

Is Middleware free to use?

We provide 14 days free trial with unlimited data ingestion. After the trial, you must switch to pay-as-you-go or enterprise pricing.

Are there different pricing tiers?

Middleware offers three tiers: Free trial, pay as you go, and custom. Free trial lets you use Middleware for 14 days with unlimited data ingestion for free. Pay-as-you-go is a flat rate for data volume and best to get started. Contracted/Enterprise is for longer term commitments, retention rates, and discounts.

How is the data usage calculated?

We measure your data on a daily basis, per data type and source. For example, 10GB per day in a 30-day month would be 300GB for the month. This is based on the amount of data actually stored on Middleware, not everything sent to the platform. You will not be charged for data that you decide to drop by using Middleware's data pipeline.

Do you have discounts for startups and nonprofits?

Yes, we do! Contact us to learn more about discount options for startups and nonprofits.

Is Middleware just a wrapper for Otel?

We leverage OTel as a framework for our agents because there is no point in creating another blackbox collector. However, we have built many components in our stack that handle streaming, compression, storage, and querying, plus a UI that brings it all together. We also support many other data collectors and origins like Prometheus and databases, and are not restricted to type of data.

What are your data retention options?

Our free tier is 14 days, pay-as-you-go is 30 days, and custom contracts have custom retention rates. Contact us to learn more about retention options.

What about data security?

Middleware works tirelessly to ensure the protection of customer data and is committed to continuous improvements to our information security management practices. We aim to ensure appropriate confidentiality, privacy, integrity, and availability practices are maintained in accordance with SOC2 Trust Service Principles. Security commitments are documented on our website, in contract agreements, or in service level agreements.

Can I cancel my account?

Yes, you can cancel anytime with the pay-as-you-go option. We keep your data for 30 days from the cancellation date so you can download them.

How much does OpsAI cost?

Error detection is free, allowing you to see all detected issues without any additional cost. For root cause analysis and automated fixes using OpsAI, we charge based on token used. You can use the pricing calculator on the website to calculate estimate pricing based on token usage.

What integrations does Middleware support?

Middleware supports all major operating systems and programming languages, with additional support for 3rd party agents like Datadog, the OTel Collector, Logstash, fluentd, and more. Data is collected through Host Agents, SDKs, and 3rd party integrations including AWS, Azure, Prometheus, and many others.
