What is Passio?
Passio is an AI-powered Nutrition Intelligence platform that transforms unstructured meal input (photos, voice notes, barcode scans, text queries) into structured, analyzable nutrition data. Its flagship product, the Nutrition-AI Hub, provides developers with SDKs and REST APIs to add food recognition and nutrition analysis to any mobile or web application. The platform combines cloud-based AI models (LLM-powered food recognition and natural language understanding) with a comprehensive 2.5M+ food database covering branded products, generic foods, and recipes.
Key features include Image Recognition for identifying meal ingredients with nutritional data, Voice Logging for speaking or typing what you ate, Barcode Scanning for packaged foods, Nutrition Facts Scanning for photographing nutrition labels, semantic Text Search across the food database, AI-powered personalized Meal Plans generation, and a conversational Nutrition Advisor AI for nutrition questions and recipes. The platform supports 100M+ API requests per year, offers global language support, and maintains 99.8% platform uptime.
Passio is designed for developers building health, fitness, nutrition, or wellness apps who need food logging, meal tracking, or dietary analysis. It is also ideal for teams adding food recognition or nutrition features to existing applications, and companies building AI-powered nutrition coaching, personalized meal planning, or food shopping experiences. The platform is built specifically for healthcare and digital health platforms, supporting preventive care, chronic disease management (including GLP-1 programs), and wellness applications with enterprise-grade security and compliance for regulated healthcare environments.
Passio pricing
Pricing model: Paid
Passio uses token-based pricing that scales with usage. Monthly plans include Starter, Growth, and Pro tiers with set token amounts. Average users consume about 250,000 tokens per month. Token usage benchmarks: Light users (80k-100k tokens/month), Average users (~250k tokens/month), Power users (300k-500k+ tokens/month). Breakdown: 1 image recognition = 3k-5k tokens, 1 minimum API call = 250 tokens, 1 week of logging = ~40k-60k tokens, 1 photo to API = 20-30k tokens. Volume discounts: 1-20M tokens at $2.50/million, 20-100M at $2.45/million, 100-500M at $2.40/million, 500M+ at $2.35/million. Automatic refill available at $2.50 per million tokens (default enabled). Cost per user can be managed between 1-10 cents by limiting free users to 80k-100k tokens. Price calculator available on account portal for estimating usage.

Frequently asked questions about Passio
What is the cost per user and can I limit it?
Costs per user vary depending on usage. You can use the calculator on Passio's account portal to estimate token usage. For example, one photo sent to the API for analysis results in 20-30k tokens spent. To manage costs, you can limit usage to a fixed amount by engineering your app with token limits, such as limiting free users to 80k-100k tokens and asking users to pay once they reach that limit. This approach demonstrates value while keeping costs between 1 to 10 cents per user.
What are tokens and how are they used in Passio Hub plans?
Tokens are the currency that powers everything inside Passio Nutrition-AI, from scanning food, logging meals, or chatting with the Nutrition Advisor. Each action such as an API request, Vision AI request, Text AI request, or Chat Message request consumes a specific number of tokens. Monthly plans include a set number of tokens, and users can purchase additional tokens if they exceed their monthly limit.
What happens if I exceed my monthly token limit?
If you exceed the monthly token limit, the billing portal allows you to configure an automatic refill option, which is enabled by default. When enabled and you make an API request without enough tokens, you are automatically billed at $2.50 per million tokens to top up. For example, if refill is set to 2 million tokens, you are charged $5.00 and gain 2 million more tokens. There are no volume discounts on refills, but you can manually purchase tokens through the dashboard. If auto-refill is turned off and you run out, the service stops responding until more tokens are added.
How do I calculate tokens needed for my application?
Use the 'Calculate Usage & Pricing' tool on the pricing page. Adjust sliders for number of users, API requests, Vision AI requests, and Text AI requests to estimate total token usage and corresponding costs. The tool provides a recommended plan and estimates total monthly cost including overage charges if applicable.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my subscription plan?
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your subscription plan at any time to better suit your usage needs. This flexibility allows you to adjust your plan based on changes in your application's user base or feature set.
What is included in REST API access for the food database and Nutrition Advisor?
The REST API is essential for the mobile SDK to gather food information and is required for SDK functionality. It offers: text-search foods, full food details and nutrition access, meal plan retrieval and management, barcode scanning for food information, computer vision routes for food recognition, and AI assistant tools including visually similar food suggestions based on user profiles and AI nutritionist conversations.
What are the volume discounts and how do they affect monthly cost?
Volume discounts are applied based on token usage. The rate per million tokens decreases as usage increases: 1-20M tokens at $2.50/million, 20-100M at $2.45/million, 100-500M at $2.40/million, 500M+ at $2.35/million. These discounts significantly reduce monthly cost with high token usage. Volume discounts are not applied on refills.
How does the auto-credit refill option work and is it mandatory?
The billing portal allows configuring automatic refill when exceeding monthly token limit. By default, this setting is enabled. When enabled and you make an API request without enough tokens, you are automatically billed at $2.50 per million tokens to top up your set amount. For example, 2 million token refill costs $5.00. No volume discounts on refills, but you can manually purchase tokens through the dashboard. If auto-refill is turned off and you run out, service stops responding until more tokens are added.
What is the Mobile app SDK quick-start app?
The Mobile SDK Quick-Start App is a demo provided by Passio that gives you a reference on how to integrate SDKs and REST API into your mobile application quickly and efficiently. It includes sample integrations and reference implementations to help developers understand setup and best practices.
How secure is my data when using Passio Hub services?
Passio Hub takes data security seriously. Data processed via cloud-side recognition is handled with strict security measures for privacy and protection. On-device recognition keeps data local to the device, providing additional security by not transmitting photos to the cloud. The standard setup does not store data that can identify users. The SDK might cache the license key for faster authentication, but everything else is just used for nutritional data. Passio does not store this data, but data is transitioned to their LLM which could be a third-party LLM such as GPT, so customers must ensure no personal data is transferred to Passio.
