The License Key is used for device identity authentication and secure access to Tuya Cloud. After a one-time purchase, each device has a unique License for identification. You only need a license if your device connects to Tuya Cloud.
Do I need a license key to connect to other cloud services?
No. TuyaOpen will support more IoT or AI cloud services in the future, and the authentication mechanism will be adapted according to each direct connection provider's requirements. Licenses are only required for Tuya Cloud connectivity.
Is the project billed monthly?
No. All fees are for the one-time purchase of a module cloud License Key per connected device, not a monthly subscription. After purchasing a license key, it is valid for that device permanently.
What does the Free plan include?
The Free plan provides basic features and an IoT OS framework supporting multiple chip platforms (Tuya MCUs, ESP32, Raspberry Pi), ideal for evaluation or small custom projects. It includes open-source OS for IoT, ability to develop Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Audio/Camera applications, comprehensive documentation, and community support.
Can I upgrade or downgrade the license key capability at any time?
Yes. Different license keys can be flashed to the chip device at any time, but each license key is for a single device only and cannot be shared between devices.

How do I get started with TuyaOpen?
First, get a TuyaOpen dedicated license (UUID + AuthKey) for Tuya Cloud access. Second, clone TuyaOpen from GitHub or Gitee, cd into the repo, and run the export script (. ./export.sh on Linux/macOS or export.ps1/export.bat on Windows) to initialize the tos.py environment. Run tos.py check, then use tos.py config choice for your board. Third, from the application directory run tos.py build and tos.py flash.
What chip platforms does TuyaOpen support?
TuyaOpen supports MCU platforms including Tuya T5 (Multimodal, recommended), Tuya T2, Tuya T3, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, ESP32-C6, BK7231X, LN882H. For SoC platforms with more headroom for edge AI, it supports Raspberry Pi, Linux, Ubuntu, and Rockchip. Full support exists on ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3, and T5AI across Windows, Linux, and macOS.
What is the release strategy for TuyaOpen versions?
TuyaOpen has three version branches: release (stable version recommended for production environments, released every 1-2 months), master (beta version suitable for early adopters, updated every Wednesday after testing), and dev (development version with latest features but may have instability). Production environments should use release version, development testing can use master, and feature preview can choose dev but be aware of potential instability.
