What is Smart Runner?
Smart Runner is an adaptive running training app for iPhone and Apple Watch that builds personalized training plans around the runner's current fitness level. Whether you're training for your first 5K or chasing a marathon PR, the app creates a plan that recalculates weekly based on your completed runs, fitness score (VDOT), and race date. The app uses proven training methodologies from Pfitzinger, Daniels, and Canova, with features like VDOT pace zones, ATL/CTL/TSB load tracking, and TRIMP stress measurement.
Key features include a native Apple Watch app showing live pace, heart rate, and HR zones during runs; coaching-grade analytics with research-backed insights (Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio, Easy Run Zone Discipline, Training Intensity Balance); running shoe mileage tracking with retirement alerts and Hall of Fame; and complete on-device data storage using Apple's SwiftData with no cloud sync or accounts required. The app supports 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon training with adaptive tapering and race-specific blocks.
Smart Runner is designed for runners of all levels—from brand-new runners doing their first kilometers to advanced runners aiming for BQ (Boston Qualify) or sub-3 hour marathons. Beginners can use the volume-building mode that focuses on consistent aerobic work without needing a recent race time, while advanced runners get access to VDOT pace zones and Canova-style race-specific training blocks. The app is ideal for runners who want to avoid subscription-based apps, as it offers a one-time lifetime purchase option.
The app integrates with Apple Health to import past runs and track training load, supports both kilometers/miles and Celsius/Fahrenheit, and provides detailed post-run analysis with workout briefing. With a 4.9-star rating on the App Store and 14-day free trial, it positions itself as a science-backed alternative to subscription-based running apps like Runna.

Frequently asked questions about Smart Runner
Is Smart Runner a subscription or a one-time purchase?
Both are available. You can pay once with the lifetime purchase and keep the app forever, or pay yearly with the annual plan. The lifetime option exists so you never have to keep paying to keep your training history. Either option includes every future update.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The first 14 days are fully unlocked. You can build your plan, run with the Apple Watch app, and see every analytic. When the trial ends, pick lifetime or annual to keep going. Your data stays on your device either way.
Where is my data stored?
Locally on your iPhone, using Apple's SwiftData. There is no Smart Runner account, no cloud sync, and no server owned by Smart Runner. Workouts come in from Apple Health and the Apple Watch, both of which stay inside Apple's ecosystem under your control.
How does Smart Runner know my paces?
From your VDOT score, the model Jack Daniels formalized in Daniels' Running Formula. Enter one recent race result, any distance from 5K to marathon, and the app derives your easy, marathon, threshold, interval, and repetition paces.
What if I don't have a recent race result?
You can manually set your VDOT in onboarding or override it later in Settings. The app also includes a volume-building mode that focuses on consistent aerobic work before locking onto a race date, which is the right call if you've been off for a while.
Does it work with Apple Watch?
Yes, natively. The companion Watch app shows live pace, heart rate, distance, and your HR zone during the run. Structured workouts (intervals, tempo, fartlek) follow your pace window stage by stage. Start, pause, and finish from your wrist; data syncs back to the iPhone automatically.
Is it only for marathons?
Marathon and half marathon get the most attention, but 5K and 10K race targets are fully supported. Volume, intensity mix, and taper logic adapt to the distance you're training for.
Does it work in miles?
Yes. Set your unit preference once in Settings (km plus Celsius, or mi plus Fahrenheit) and every distance, pace, and temperature in the app, the Watch, and notifications respects your choice.
Can I import my past runs?
Yes. On first launch the app reads your recent workout history from Apple Health and seeds your training load and fitness baseline. Pull to refresh on the Today screen any time to re-sync and clean up any duplicate imports.
Will it sync with Garmin, Coros, or Strava?
Not directly. Smart Runner is iPhone and Apple Watch only. If your Garmin or Coros pushes workouts to Apple Health, those runs get picked up automatically, but there is no native integration with third-party platforms and no cloud bridge.
