Frequently asked questions about VisuaLeaf
What is VisuaLeaf?
VisuaLeaf is a modern MongoDB GUI (graphical user interface) and visual workspace that helps developers and teams explore, query, and understand MongoDB data without writing complex JSON code. It features a visual query builder, aggregation pipeline builder with drag-and-drop functionality, schema visualization, split panel views, query profiler, GridFS viewer, SQL mode, charts and dashboards, and AI-assisted query generation.
Is VisuaLeaf free to use?
Yes, VisuaLeaf has a free Community Edition that includes core features like managing MongoDB connections, creating/modifying/deleting databases collections and indexes, executing MongoDB commands in an interactive shell, and querying/browsing MongoDB collections. The free edition includes a 14-day trial of all Professional features with no credit card required.
What platforms does VisuaLeaf support?
VisuaLeaf is cross-platform and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The application can be downloaded for free and works on all major operating systems without platform-specific limitations.
How does the visual query builder work?
The visual query builder lets you build complex MongoDB queries without writing JSON syntax. You drag fields from your collection schema into the query area, select operators from dropdown menus ($eq, $gt, $lt, $in, $regex, etc.), combine conditions with visual AND/OR grouping, and watch the MongoDB query generate in real-time as JSON. The builder supports bi-directional sync with the code view and includes type-aware inputs that adapt based on field data type.
What is the aggregation pipeline builder?
The aggregation pipeline builder is a form-based visual tool for creating complex MongoDB aggregation pipelines. It provides stage-by-stage preview so you can see results at each aggregation stage as you build, allowing you to debug pipelines instantly instead of running the entire pipeline and hoping it works. It includes a visual pipeline builder, synchronized JSON view, and performance metrics.
Does VisuaLeaf support AI features?
Yes, VisuaLeaf includes AI-powered query generation that allows you to describe what you want in plain English and automatically generates the corresponding MongoDB query. The AI remembers conversation context for follow-up refinements, understands your collection schema for accurate field suggestions, and includes query explanations. Setup requires configuring an AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or other LLMs) in Settings → AI Configuration with your API key.
What view modes are available in VisuaLeaf?
VisuaLeaf offers four view modes: Tree View for hierarchical display ideal for exploring nested document structures with expand/collapse functionality; Table View for spreadsheet-like display with sortable/resizable columns for comparing documents side by side; BSON View for raw MongoDB Extended JSON with syntax highlighting showing exact BSON types; and Explain View for query performance analysis with execution plan visualization and index usage analysis.
Can I export data from VisuaLeaf?
Yes, VisuaLeaf supports importing and exporting data in multiple formats including JSON, CSV, BSON, and SQL. You can import/export directly from the Collection Activity toolbar, with import supporting JSON, CSV, and BSON formats. Export allows you to export query results to various formats, and includes import/export transformations with field masking and editing capabilities during export.
What is the difference between Basic and Professional plans?
The Basic plan ($42 one-time) includes everything in Community Edition plus customizable workspace layouts, data import/export tasks and database migrations, role-based access control for user permissions, and building/executing MongoDB aggregation pipelines. The Professional plan ($149/year) includes everything in Basic plus custom dashboards with multiple widgets, side-by-side collection data comparison, and team license management for managing team members.
